Did you know March 8 is International Women’s Day? The event has been celebrated for more than 100 years to mark the economic, political and social achievements of women.
I recently had the privilege of interviewing one of the world’s leading women’s healthcare advocates, Yvette Mulongo, who works in her home country of the Democratic Republic of Congo — where rape, death during childbirth and other medical conditions are still commonplace. Yvette was in San Francisco to receive an award from the Americans for UNFPA (United Nations Population Fund). Find out what she’s doing to help at BlogHer, where I’ve written up a feature about Yvette, as part of the series A Month of Awesome Women.
The Guardian UK also has a great article today called Top 100 Women, featuring some obvious picks, like Oprah Winfrey, and some less familiar names such as one of my personal inspirations, Somaly Mam. Who is she? Who are the others? You’ll have to read to find out.
Also, Arianna Huffington marks the closure of the Huff Po – AOL transaction by writing about this year’s International Women’s Day theme of work, education and technology in Life (and Work) Lessons Every Woman Should Learn, in which she reveals the surprising source of her motivation.
And check back on A Month of Awesome Women through the end of March. Maybe you’ll find a new hero…
