Last fall, we told you about Disney’s upcoming animated film Moana, which is set in Oceania, featuring a Pacific Islander storyline, and starring Native Hawaiian Auli’i Cravalho and mixed-race Samoan Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Now there’s a trailer out that gives us a glimpse of Johnson’s role as the character Maui, a once-mighty demigod.
Maui meets the adventurous teenage girl Moana and helps guide her on a journey to learn about what happened to her ancestors and to find her identity. That’s piqued my interest, for sure!
One thing I found especially interesting: Tony-winner Lin-Manuel Miranda (Broadway’s Pulitzer Prize-winning and multiple Tony-winning “Hamilton”) is part of the diverse team behind the film’s music. Also onboard are Grammy-winning composer Mark Mancina (“Speed,” “Tarzan” “The Lion King”) and Opetaia Foa’i (founder and lead singer of the world music award-winning band Te Vaka).

High hopes for this one. Like the moving tattoos and the song. Sounds a little bit like Lilo and Stitch, which I guess makes sense…

I loved Princess and the Frog and the whole New Orleans setting. I’m sure I’m going to love this too. The animation looks beautiful and I love the amount of detail they put into the hair.
