My Kindergartener brought home a flyer for the Growing Up Asian in America contest.
Oh, sweet! You can win up to $27,000 in scholarship money… just by writing an essay about being Asian! Where do I sign up?
But upon reading the fine print, the contest is only for Kindergarten through 12th grade. And try as I might to convince my six year old or my eight year old, “Do you want to write a fun little story? How about drawing a picture?” they just weren’t interested. ( A real Asian mom would have locked them in their rooms until they produced a completed project…)
But perhaps your children would be. The theme of this year’s contest is “Lost and Found”:
Tell us about something or someone important that you lost and, later, what you found about that experience. When you lost something or found out how you felt, was it different because you are Asian or similar to other people?
And the entries don’t need to be essays. Poetry and art can also be submitted.
More information and complete guidelines can be found at: The Asian Pacific Fund.
Good Luck!
