It’s so great to see mainstream media paying attention to Asian American issues! I got a call from MSNBC asking me to go on The Rundown with Jose Diaz-Balart to talk about the Big Hero 6 Oscar win for Best Animated Feature Film and also about Asian American representation in general.
OF COURSE I SAID YES.

The thing is… the show airs at 9 am EST, and I live in California. But it was worth waking up before the sun, combing my hair, and driving in pre-dawn rush hour traffic (yes, there is such a thing in Silicon Valley) to get to the studio. It was so weird to sit in a dark TV studio by myself, with only the klieg lights and my nice cameraman to connect me with the control room in New York.
My segment ended up being about three minutes long — which is three minutes more than Asian American topics usually get! We crammed a lot into that time, including talking about the underrepresentation of Asians in entertainment, the growth of the AAPI population and Fresh Off the Boat.
Check out the video of my interview on MSNBC:
Thanks again to MSNBC and Jose Diaz-Balart for having me on and helping get #AAPIVoices on the air!
