Every spring, I start thinking: What are my kids going to do all summer? How can I make time for work? And how can I make sure they are learning something that interests them? Last year, my boys went to a Galileo tech camp and they loved it!
When choosing summer camps for my children, I want to make sure it’s not just babysitting, but supplemental education. We all know that during the school year, there’s a little too much emphasis on the basics of math and language arts, and unfortunately science and creativity often get pushed to the side. So I want summer break to be a time when they can delve deeper into STEM fields and also have a good time. After all, it is vacation!
Luckily for families in the San Francisco Bay Area, Galileo offers camps in many communities, including Berkeley, Fremont, Palo Alto and San Jose. This year, they are expanding their sites to include a few locations in Los Angeles, too.
First of all, when I select summer programs, I look for subjects that my kids naturally gravitate toward. For Little Brother, that meant Lego Robotics.
After all, what boy (or girl) wouldn’t love to mess around with bins full of bricks and gears? The students have a lot of freedom to mix things up and figure out what works — or doesn’t work — for them. After all, that’s part of learning! And after they build vehicles with the Lego robotics equipment, they tried their hand at basic programming skills, essentially making their own remote control cars.
Big Brother is ready for something a little more advanced, so he took the week-long intro to computer programming camp.
For kids with different interests, Galileo also offers other “majors”, including painting, filmmaking, cooking and Go-Kart building. There are even themes around cultural learning, such as exploring San Francisco or learning about Mount Everest.
