While Chinese New Year is often celebrated at home with family and friends, there’s also a time to go out and take part in public festivities. Where to go with kids in the Bay Area? Luckily, there are lots of events to choose from, starting this weekend and running through March. Year of the Snake Festivities in San Jose

Join members of the Chinese community to kick off the Year of the Snake, try your hand at traditional crafts, and enjoy displays and performances.
Community Day: Lunar New Year
February 9, 2013, 11 AM–5 PM
San Jose Museum of Modern Art
Celebrate the Year of the Snake with a community day including live music, a traditional lion dance, hands-on art-making activities, performances by youth groups, and more. In the Chinese zodiac, the snake is a sign of intelligence, gracefulness, and ambition. Enjoy cultural activities and get a glimpse of today’s China in the exhibition Rising Dragon: Contemporary Chinese Photography. Admission is free.
Chinese New Year Celebration Year of the Snake
March 2, 2013
Santana Row welcomes the Year of the Snake with Tony Chen, award-winning music producer and radio host of the “Sound of Hope” variety show and “Morning Concert” on KSJO 92.3 FM. It’s an afternoon of Lunar New Year festivities, including exciting drumbeats and crashing cymbals of the Chinese dragon and lion dance and other ethnic performances, martial arts, traditional fashion shows and more. Program lineup and entertainment specifics will be available closer to the event date.
Year of the Snake Festivities in San Francisco
Chinese New Year Parade
February 23, 2013 5:15 PM – 8 PM
This is the biggest annual parade in the Bay Area, which can be viewed from streets in and around Chinatown. Dress warmly and be prepared to stay out for the evening, as it can get crowded!
Chinese Community Street Fair
February 24, 2013, 9 AM – 5 PM
Daytime festivities fill the Chinatown neighborhood.
