I’ve become one of those people. You know, the kind that raves about how delicious and life-changing green smoothies are. If I wasn’t already stuffing my blender full of leafy greens, the start of a new year would have been the perfect time to begin. Certainly after indulging in Christmas cookies (I baked five kinds last week) and champagne, it is time to up the intake of healthier foods.
Since the smoothies are already green from spinach, matcha green tea powder seemed like the perfect addition. I have a weakness for creamy matcha treats, so these flavors just seemed to go together. I used vanilla coconut milk, yellow fruits, and a little banana to round things out. Between the coconut milk, which is already sweetened, and the pineapple and peaches, no additional sugar or honey is needed. This smoothie is just sweet enough, but not so high in sugar that it makes you crave more.
Here’s to health and happiness in 2014!
Matcha Green Tea Smoothie
Serves 1-2
Ingredients
1 c. frozen pineapple, peaches or mango (I used a combination of pineapple and peaches)
1/2 banana
2-3 ice cubes
1 1/2 c. vanilla coconut milk
1 large handful of spinach leaves
1/2-1 tsp. matcha powder
DirectionsÂ
Put all the ingredients in a blender and blend at a high speed until creamy and smooth.
Pour into a tall glass or two short glasses and enjoy!

I LOVE the color to these smoothies. Do you have a recommendation for where to find matcha powder in the Bay Area and what brand to buy?
Grace says
You can buy matcha powder at any Japanese market, such as Mitsuwa, or a well-stocked Asian grocery such as Ranch 99. The can shown in my photos was from Whole Foods. Make sure you buy powder and not regular green tea. It can be very expensive, and it’s fine to use “cooking” matcha, as opposed to “drinking” matcha, which is pricier. Thanks for stopping by!

Excellent — thanks!. Using matcha powder will be new for me and I’m excited to try it out in a fashion that will help in this early summer heat.
