Have you seen the Disney Channel’s new show Andi Mack? It stars 13-year-old Peyton Elizabeth Lee, who is Chinese-Irish-Italian, and features a mixed-race family, with Lauren Tom mom/grandmother Cecilia and Lilan Bowden of the Upright Citizens Brigade as big sister/mother Bex.
The first season, which just ended last week, explores how the family must figure out their roles when Bex returns home and reveals that she is actually Andi’s mom, not wild older sister. Oh, and there’s a dad, too. Plus, she’s a middle schooler with a crush on a cute boy (who happens to have a girlfriend). It really is a modern family.
Andi Mack just got picked up for a second season, and I’m curious to see how the family issues will unfold and also if the interracial and multicultural aspects will be part of the storyline.
