We Watched Disney Zootopia in Style With Dolby Cinemas at AMC Prime

We’ve had a super rainy weekend in the Bay Area. Which is great for the drought. Luckily, we had tickets to see Disney’s Zootopia at the Dolby Cinemas AMC Prime at Newpark Mall in Newark. In case you haven’t heard, Zootopia is a new animated film from Disney about a small town rabbit named Judy Hopps who wants to be the first bunny on the big city police force.

It’s a great movie for all ages, with very sweet themes and classic Disney animation and no sexual innuendo or violence, although there are a few intense chase scenes that probably wouldn’t faze most school age kids.

Thanks to the Dolby Cinema at AMC Prime’s ticket giveaway, I had the opportunity to invite two other families, including my brother’s three and five-year old kids.

Zootopia has a storyline that’s sophisticated enough to appeal to teens and adults, too.

13-year-old Big Brother and his friend also came along. Good thing they have free refills on large popcorn… teenage boys eat a LOT.

When Judy Hopps follows her dreams (against common wisdom and her parents’ wishes) to become the first bunny in the overwhelmingly large, tough — and may I add, male — Zootopia PD, things don’t go smoothly for her. The chief begrudgingly accepts here, but pigeonholes her into meter maid duties. Luckily, she finds another female small mammal ally in the mayor’s office and things start looking up.

But is it really as simple as good vs. bad or even predator vs. prey? There’s a lot to think about, from the general themes of not judging a group to more nuanced themes of how things — even facts — may be misleading and the complicated nature of alliances and even good intentions.
