It’s College Savings Month!

Are your kids all settled back into school? I love the routines of fall, especially all the new things: new clothes, new backpacks, new teachers, new friends. Big Brother started high school this fall… and it’s getting real. There’s a college and career center on campus, and what are these mailers we’re getting for SAT and AP tests?!
The good thing is that the beginning of each school year is a chance for a fresh start and to establish new habits… and that includes us parents.
It makes perfect sense that September is also College Savings Month. Since we’re all focused on learning at this time of year, it’s also a good time to get into the routine of saving for our kids’ higher educations.
So even if you haven’t starting putting away money for your kids’ university tuition (and it’s just a few years away for some of us. Ahem), there are easy ways to save a little each month through ScholarShare, California’s 529K College Savings Plan. It’s like a 401K for education. You can automatically deposit funds or family members can contribute through e-gift options.
Even small steps can add up.

College Savings Pledge Sweepstakes
To help get things started, ScholarShare is hosting its annual College Savings Pledge Sweepstakes. As part of the pledge, declare how much you want to save each month for your future college grad — even if it is just $25. Throughout September, five eligible sweepstakes entrants will be selected each week to receive $500 (in the form of a ScholarShare Gift of College gift card) to support their savings goals.
