School’s out!
My kids’ summer vacation started ridiculously early this year. Which means that in about two days, we will hear the inevitable chorus of “I’m bored!”
It’s said over and over that reading on a daily basis is one of the most important things kids can do to avoid the summer slide. One of my favorite Asian American children’s authors, Lisa Yee, tells how her Chinese mother instilled her love of reading on ParentDish. Wouldn’t you love to give your kids that love of reading? Besides that, it’s fun! I also like to think of summer as a time for kids to explore subjects that they don’t always get to learn about during the year.
“Books are the BEST way to get out of your comfort zone. And if you have easy access to books – via libraries, bookstores, and even on the internet – then get out you must! The world is only getting smaller … and being a global citizen today comes with the responsibility of avoiding any myopia and banishing all xenophobia!”
— Terry Hong, Smithsonian Book Dragon
